So many people have asked me how did you start building furniture.
The next question is can you teach me.
I find these questions coming from my female friends. So let me answer the first question which indirectly answers the second question.
I always wanted to build things, but somehow believed that was reserved for the male gender. I had started painting and repurposing with Annie Sloan chalk paint and loved the results.
In the search for ideas, I stumbled upon Ana White’s website. Here was a woman who was building furniture and using power tools. This stay at home mother from Alaska offered advice, free plans and encouragement. Odd as it may seem, she gave me inspiration and permission to pursue this passion.
So I gathered a few tools and started building. I spent hours watching tutorials on line on how to use a Kreg pocket hole jig. This taught me how to join two pieces of wood. I used a free workbench plan on Kreg’s website and featured on Shanty 2 Chic to for my first build. I recommend a workbench before anything else. It is just as much a necessity as the tools!
I bought a few drills, a decent miter saw, a circle saw, an entry level contractor table saw and a jig saw. I even watched videos on how to cut wood! Some of my best friends in the whole world bought me a hand sander for finishing. Then I dreamed up how I thought the colors would look on wood and the rest is history. Within the year, I bought a router and bits.
So, yes you can build too! I will be showing you tips I have learned to make what you have always wanted! Please ask me questions!!!!
